(AP) ? President Barack Obama could name his next defense secretary in December, far sooner than expected and perhaps in a high-powered package announcement with his choice for secretary of state, several senior administration officials tell The Associated Press.

The personnel moves, coupled with Obama's coming choice for a new leader of the Central Intelligence Agency, will be viewed by U.S. allies and enemies alike as signal of how he will pursue national security in a second term. All of his choices will be subject to Senate confirmation, which itself is a significant factor in his decisions.

The top names under consideration for defense secretary are former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, former top Pentagon official Michele Flournoy, Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts. Among those, Kerry is seen as desiring the secretary of state's job more.

While Obama has made no final decisions on Cabinet vacancies, announcements could come as soon as next week.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has made clear he did not intend to stay for a second term but he has never publicly discussed the timing of his departure, widely thought to be down the road in 2013. Yet Obama's thinking on Panetta's replacement has quietly advanced, aided by a strong list of candidates, officials said.

One senior U.S. official said Panetta is expected to stay on the job at least through the Jan 21 inauguration ceremony for Obama, another sign that the president is close to naming a new defense chief. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss internal White House thinking.

Far more political attention has centered on the chief diplomatic job of secretary of state.

Obama is believed almost certain to pick Kerry or U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, with Obama's considerations of his choice so closely held that even members of his innermost circle are asking each other which way he may go. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has long announced her plans to leave and hopes to do so soon.

The White House is considering packaging the state and defense choices with the flourish of a unified announcement, if the pieces come together. The president wants to choose nominees not just on their merits, the officials said, but on how well their styles and philosophy mesh with other members of the Cabinet who will hold overlapping portfolios.

That is particularly true for the leaders of state and defense. They are the top faces of his security apparatus, the leaders who bracket Obama at Cabinet meetings, the ones central to an integrated approach toward coping with international crises. Officials close to Obama said a joint announcement could present a stronger message.

For the State job, Obama has strong ties to both candidates. Rice is a close friend, and aides say the two are in lockstep on foreign policy. Kerry was an early backer of Obama during his 2008 presidential bid, a valuable envoy abroad, a help in his re-election bid and a contender to be his first secretary of state.

A big factor in Obama's decision is how much early capital he would have to spend on a confirmation fight. While Kerry has the backing of his longtime Senate colleagues, Rice is facing withering criticism from some Republicans for her initial account of the deadly attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, in September.

A contentious confirmation fight could send Rice into the job with weakened support and use up some of the tough votes he may need from allies in the Senate later. Still, Obama has already set a tone that he may choose Rice regardless.

A decision on new leadership for the CIA is not as urgent. That's partly because Acting Director Michael Morell is still dealing with the fallout of David Petraeus' resignation over an extramarital affair and the battles with lawmakers over the events that led to the death of four Americans in Libya.

Morell is highly respected within the administration and seen as a top contender.

Other candidates are the White House's top counterterrorism and homeland security advisor, John Brennan, and the Pentagon's top intelligence official, Undersecretary for Defense Intelligence Michael Vickers, a former CIA officer and Green Beret. Also possible is the former senator Hagel, should he miss out for the top Pentagon job. Hagel co-chairs Obama's intelligence advisory board and held senior positions on the Senate Intelligence and Foreign Relations committees.

A near-term shakeup at the Defense Department would come as the Pentagon faces a flurry of decisions on troop levels in Afghanistan and budgets. The looming end-of-the year spending cuts the White House and Congress are seeking to avert would hit the Pentagon particularly hard.

At Defense, Hagel would give Obama a whiff of bipartisanship, and could be the only Republican in the Cabinet if Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood leaves, as expected.

Flournoy would be the first woman to lead the Defense Department. She served in the Pentagon under Panetta as undersecretary of defense for policy, resigning early this year. She served as a foreign policy adviser to Obama during his re-election campaign.

Carter, who has served as deputy defense secretary for the past year, is a protege of former Defense Secretary William Perry.

Curacao police have new leads in $11.5M gold heist

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao (AP) ? Police in Curacao said Saturday that they have several leads following a brazen heist in which gunmen pretending to be police stole 70 gold bars worth an estimated $11.5 million from a fishing boat.

Authorities have the license plate number of one of three cars used in Friday's getaway, and they have been asking for the public's help in tracking the suspects, police spokesman Reggie Huggins told The Associated Press.

"There is information coming in," he said. "We are getting reactions from the public, but we still have to sort it out."

Police have said that at least six men were involved, but no one has been arrested in a case that surprised authorities in the Dutch Caribbean island.

Huggins said police are still interviewing the ship's captain and three crew members, which contacted officials in Curacao about the incoming gold shipment as part of regular security protocol. The gold bars weigh about 216 kilograms (476 pounds).

Police declined to say where the gold was being delivered, but one crew member, who identified himself to the AP as Raymond Emmanuel, said they were delivering the gold to an unidentified company in Curacao.

He said the crew left Guyana on Tuesday and arrived in Curacao early Friday. Shortly after the ship docked, masked gunmen wearing jackets with the word "police" assaulted the boat's captain and then stole the gold bars.

Huggins said that security guards allowed the suspects to enter a restricted area thinking they were customs officials.

Meanwhile, officials in Guyana said they are investigating whether the gold was indeed mined in the South American country, which is near Curacao.

Environment Minister Robert Persaud told the AP that they have requested details about the gold bars, adding that such shipments are usually flown directly to the buyer and involve heavy security. The ship's crew members have said they weren't armed.

Both Persaud and Anan Balram, director of Guyana's Gold Board, said that if the gold was mined in Guyana, it would be a clear case of smuggling.

"We don't want to jump the gun and say that the gold is from Guyana," Persaud said. "That is what we first have to establish, as well as if the ship many any other stops anywhere else."

Officials said there is no record of the ship, named "Summer Bliss," leaving Guyana's Port Georgetown Harbor, adding that it could have left from a pier at any of the country's numerous rivers.

Guyana produces roughly 650,000 ounces of gold a year, and officials say that up to half that amount is smuggled out of the country to avoid paying taxes. Most of the gold is sold in neighboring Brazil, Venezuela and Suriname.

Self Help Trends ? Alicia Morga's Blog

Self-help is a $11 billion dollar industry (including books, CDs, seminars, coaching and stress management programs) that continues to evolve.

The hottest growth areas in 2008-2009 were ?holistic institutes? (e.g., Deepak Chopra?s centers) and ?training? companies like Dale Carnegie Training (author of How to Win Friends and Influence People).

From 2010 to 2012 research by Daniel Gilbert ushered happiness into vogue. He created an iPhone app to collect data called TrackYourHappiness and wrote a book called Stumbling on Happiness. Shortly thereafter, happiness was all the rage, with books like The Happiness Project making Gilbert?s research even more mainstream.

Now the current wave of self-help, at least for the college-educated set, is centered on behavior change and in particular, habit change. In the last year dozens of books have been published on the subject. The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg is perhaps the best known.

It?s an area that has also captured the attention of Silicon Valley. Leading the thinking on this front is Stanford Professor BJ Fogg. His research on how to create positive habits can be seen in several new technology start-ups and mobile apps focused on change, many designed as goal setting apps.

At the same time, self-help has found its way to television. Today, there are approximately 60 television shows on major networks and cable stations focused on self-help in some form ? whether that be getting your dog to behave or stopping excessive drinking.

While leading research and information about current self-help concepts are making their way into books and early technologies, they are missing in media. On the other side, the impact of current research is limited, for the most part, to the reach of sometimes very academic non-fiction books and small groups of app users.? To create the greatest impact information, technology and entertainment must come together.

I?m starting to see work in that direction.? Question is, will the combination improve the self-improvement industry?

Palestinian Legal strategy against Israel: The Real Prize is Europe ...

The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to accord Palestine the status of ?Observer State? on Thursday, with 138 countries voting in favor of the measure, 41 abstaining, and only 9 voting against. The US and Israel were decisively marginalized, as Italy and Sweden joined France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and several other European countries in voting for the new status. Continental Western Europe and Scandinavia were almost unanimous in supporting the Palestinians, in a kind of declaration of independence from the Obama administration. Even Germany, which for historical reasons is typically reluctant to buck Israel, voted to abstain rather than to oppose.

From the Israeli press, it appears that many government and press figures are absolutely stunned and in a state of angry disbelief over the magnitude of this diplomatic defeat. The Israeli Right wing is so out of touch with how its aggressive policies are seen by the outside world and so self-righteous and arrogant that it even launched a Facebook page urging a boycott of Israeli supermodel Bar Rafaeli merely for tweeting during the recent Gaza war, ?I pray for the safety of the citizens on both sides and for the day when we will live in peace and harmony. Amen.? Caring about human beings from the other side, or praying for peace are apparently verboten in ?Strong Israel.? (Somehow I think Ms. Rafaeli?s fan base is secure, inside and outside Israel).

How the World voted:

Green: In favor; Red: Against; Yellow: Abstain; Blue: Absent; Grey: Non-Members

The UNGA vote will not have a big immediate effect on the lives of Palestinians toiling under Israeli occupation. But over time, if the Palestinian leadership deploys it wisely, the new status could have an incremental effect, especially affecting Israel?s relationship to Europe. Europe itself now has the opportunity to play the kind of honest broker between the two sides that the US pretended to but almost never did (Jimmy Carter a partial exception).

Many European countries have elevated the Palestine mission in their capitals to the status of full embassy. Palestine?s new status as UN observer state could well become a basis for it being given further embassies in Europe. Being an embassy rather than a mission strengthens the legal status of Palestine, including in national courts and EU tribunals.

Israel?s economy is deeply dependent on its relationship to Europe, the largest single source of imports into Israel and the second-largest market for exports (after the United States). European investment in Israel is also significant, as are various agreements giving Israel access to European technological advances and promoting scientific and technological exchange.

The European Union imports 15 times more goods from Israeli setter enterprises in the Occupied West Bank than from the Palestinians themselves. Europe is therefore a major, hidden support for Israeli crimes against the Palestinians.

Much speculation has focused on whether Palestine will attempt to take Israel to the International Criminal Court, getting specific Israeli officials or officers indicted for war crimes or crimes against humanity. Such cases may well be brought, and if successful might more or less imprison the individual inside Israel, since traveling abroad would risk arrest by Interpol.

But actually, gaining the standing to provoke resolutions and statements from various United Nations bodies and committees is also important. Such documents can then be cited in the European Parliament and in national parliaments in Europe. Over time, a latticework of human rights law on the treatment of the Palestinians can be erected that might well cause Europeans to boycott settler-made goods or even Israel proper (after all, the settlers are being sent into Palestine by the Likud government). One Israeli strategy over the years has been to attempt to prevent the creation of such a body of resolutions, findings, and judgments (the US veto on the Security Council and the lack of Palestinian standing as a state to bring matters before the UNGA both aided in this Israeli quest for impunity).

A big problem with international law, such as the Geneva Convention on the treatment of Occupied populations (1949), the Apartheid convention, etc., is that they typically do not have attached to them any court in which a practical judgment of guilt can be rendered. The European Court of Human Rights and the International Criminal Court are steps toward achieving such arenas of adjudication for claims of rights violation. But the European Court of Human Rights, e.g., has no mechanism for enforcing its rulings.

It seems to me that any court rulings against Israel will have their major effect through providing a basis for civil society organizations (unions, businesses, associations, NGOs) and parliaments to punish Israeli war crimes, Apartheid crimes, and crimes against humanity through boycotts. Over time, such steps could begin having a major impact on settler enterprises and even on the Israeli economy itself (which is fragile and highly dependent on foreign trade with Europe, since its goods are often shunned in the Middle East).

An example is the recent demand of the youth wing of the Swedish Social Democratic Party that Sweden boycott all settler-made goods. (Sweden, a little unexpectedly, voted for the UNGA resolution yesterday). If such demands proliferate, and the next generation of Europeans feels so strongly on this issue, the settlers could end up bankrupted.

How this could work is clear on a small scale is apparent in the 2010 European Court of Justice ruling that goods from the Occupied West Bank do not fall under the European Union?s preferential trade provisions for Israeli goods. What is important here is that German authorities declined to allow the British firm Brita to import mineral water tariff-free into Germany because they believe it originated with a settler company in the West Bank. The German decision was upheld by the ECJ.

Expect to see more such decisions by governments in Europe, and by its courts. The Palestinian victory at the UN will likely begin creating a whole set of new opportunities for the Palestinians to make their case in the most important Israeli market.

Online Dating: Secrets of a Narcissist

Richard (not his real name) profiled me as his perfect partner on an online dating site rated as a top trusted relationship provider in the USA. For many decades he had fooled friends, family, and colleagues while sexually abusing the clients that he was ethically bound to do no harm to. Richard has a long trail of soul murdered women in his pursuit of ideal love and omnipotence.

He is a charming, seducing, angelic narcissist creating misery in his wake. Narcissists tend to damage the lives of almost every person they encounter by lying, betraying, and manipulating. For Richard's ex-wives and child their life with him was purgatory. For all he could keep hostage, it was misery, a nightmare. For some partners it must have felt like evil.

According to the DSM-IV-TR, a patient must exhibit five or more of the following traits in order to be diagnosed with NPD:

?? shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

?? grandiose sense of self-importance

?? preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love

?? belief that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)

?? need for excessive admiration

?? sense of entitlement

?? takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends

?? lacks empathy

?? often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her

Narcissist are compulsive in their pursuit of narcissistic supply (awe, admiration, attention, even being feared) and projecting a loving image that is compatible with his or her false self-image. A narcissist's projected image tends to be lovable until he or she gets tired of being nice. No longer able to manufacture adoration in their partner; being feared then becomes narcissistic supply. A victim's emotional pain and destroyed self-esteem feeds the fantasy of being all-powerful and capable of anything.

The start of our relationship was a whirlwind romance. The chemistry appeared to be instant for both of us. We met outside a bookstore. I was sitting on a bench, when I locked eyes with him, the sexual tension was immediate. My whole body was vibrating with aliveness. He mistook my loving nativity and longing for being gullible. He underestimated my integrity and commitment for doing no harm to others. He was too good to be true and I didn't understand that meant a nightmare. He came across as a confident, charming, attentive, professional in my field. Shortly after we were dating he started making plans and began to tell me he loved me. I was the ideal reflection of true love for his preoccupation with projecting a lovable image. He had no intention of following through on the promises he made. He had picked me to better his status and save him from financial disaster. My life had been so extraordinary as a result of my personal adversities that I believed this miracle man was possible. His insidious ability to mirror my wish-fulfillment (delusion) for a perfect man was award-winning as was the lovability of his projected image. My emotions of awe, respect, admiration, and attention were food for his narcissistic supply. He catered to my needs and wishes because he craved my reflected love and admiration. It was through my reactions that he felt an illusionary sense of self. Richard was sadly divorced from his true self and married to his image. He was an empty soul forced to use me in order to feel his existence. If I had not caught his written admission of the crimes he committed over several decades I might have become his mere instrument for gratification. He was never bothered by his history of unscrupulous behavior and the constant exploitation of his victims. Indifferent to the consequences of his actions, the damage and pain he inflicted on his partners, son, friends, client's or family. The written admission of the crimes he committed came as a result of a major life crisis which directly threatened his projected and perceived image. Life crises are typically the only times a narcissist may seek help. A girlfriend he had lived with for 10 years ended their relationship and at the same time his 16-year-old son from a previous marriage got a court ordered restraining order put in place, stating to the judge, "My father is too immature to be a parent." In a moment of desperation, two years before we met, he wrote about his secrets in a journal. In his disorganized character style he left the journal in his library bookshelf.

Early in our relationship, after declarations of love, and before his proposal, he left his email page open on his computer. I noticed emails coming from our on-line dating site. I mentioned this to him asking if he was still looking for a match. I saw irritation cross his face as he told me he was off the dating site, but they kept sending him email. I took him at his word and let it go. Later, when he asked for my hand in marriage, I accepted. Weeks after the engagement the manipulation began for me to pay his bills. My financial solution was to sell my home and move in to his house. I reasoned that moving in was the right action to take because we were lifetime partners. I was very fortunate because the beginning of grace was being manifested. I was settled in his home when my lap top stop working and he allowed me to use his computer. Again, I was home one evening when he was attending a men's support group and he had left his email page open. I saw email communications from several dating sites. I did not open the messages. I was shocked, devastated, and numb. I told him what I had discovered when he came home. He exploded accusing me of bizarre intentions and accusations. We later explored the cognitive distortions that allowed him to verbally attack my character. We are both in the mental health field and empathy would have been the emotionally appropriate reaction to my discovery, especially since he professed innocence. My red flags went up. Several days later I opened the "Windows Media Center" program on his lap top to look at some pictures we had taken and the program opened his email site. There I saw several communications with women from various dating sites. One of the email's was dated after he had asked me to marry him and I opened the communication. The truth of his betrayal was revealed to me. I was so upset that I left our bed that night to sleep on the couch in his library loft. I looked through the multitude of self-help books in the shelves to see if I could find one on sexual addiction. It was then that I found a brown journal outlining his sex crimes against clients and the history of abusive treatment with women he married and partnered. After reading his disclosures I wasn't sure what kind of person I was dealing with and feared I might be in personal danger. I decided the best action was to go back to bed and pretend I was okay. Fortunately, his place of work was at a great distance from home. He had a routine of staying overnight with friends or at work on Monday and Tuesday nights, coming home on Wednesday nights and then he was off from work on Thursdays. I consulted with a colleague on the discovery of his crimes and then took the evidence to the police. I arranged to move all my belongings out of his house and went into hiding as the FBI Sex Crime Unit and local police evaluated the evidence. In the meantime he didn't know I had left until he came home on Wednesday night. The phone calls and emails began immediately and before he knew he was under police investigation. I did not respond to his attempts to contact me and have not spoken to him since this happen several years ago. No contact is the only way to deal with a sociopathic narcissist when you leave.

Following is one of his emails to me after I left his house and below are a few excerpts from his journal.

"Hi Baby,

Please don't believe your mind! You know about negative fear based thinking. What you saw is what you saw, but like looking at the glass you can see it as half-full or half empty. Listen to my heart. Carlos Constenada says in, "The Teaching of Don Juan", "when you are at the crossroads and both roads go nowhere choose the one with HEART IN IT." Please listen to my heart. We were beginning to plan our lives and our wedding. I want to marry you. I want to give you your ring back. I am sorry. I know I let you down. I don't want "the ring" it's yours, let me give it back. I have been hurt and confused by this too. Forgive me, I was wrong. I am sorry I was wrong in not protecting your mind from the painful thoughts that I betrayed you. If I would had destroyed those emails this would never have happened. I DID NOT BETRAY YOU AND NEVER WOULD. I am sorry you read those emails. I pissed you off. If you need more proof that I can be trusted, than I will give it to you. Help me help us so I can help you. You punished me enough, but let US work it out. I will go to therapy with you. I will go to groups. I want a life with you, whatever it takes. I never had the opportunity to have my hearts dream with a woman. We have the juice to have a real beautiful romantic life. Let your anger go. Let us have each other back."

Excerpts from his journal:

"I have used woman as objects and manipulated them for my own purposes. I used Linda (not her real name) as a sexual object to clean house and serve my needs, so I could read and do for myself for self serving purposes. I married Sally (not her real name) because I thought I could use her to provide for my security. We were compatible. She had more competence in business and with finances. She wanted to have a child. She was someone who would take risks."

**************************************

"I have been willing to use anyone. For years I would do the beach patrol and use women's bodies to relieve my sexual narcissism. I hurt people with sex. I used clients for my needs. I used clients and I used my sexual instinct. I wanted so many women. I had sex with many clients to meet my own needs. I have used women as sexual objects to control for my own joy."

***************************

"Sex, Drugs & Rock N Roll. I am a bad ass risk-taking tough guy. I got my body in shape to protect myself. I live in the basic instincts. I have a persona of a hunk. To be a man meant you could endure more pain and take more risk. I was willing to challenge people and use force to get my way."

****************************

"I have had a strong lust for the touch of attractive women in my life. I was not much interested in her character. I am a sex hound, a cheat, someone who has stolen when given a chance. I have an interest only in what I can get and at times I am desperate and have had to settle. I settled with Linda, Sally, Karen, and Joyce because of what they could do for me. Diane was someone I could use and she had a house."

*******************************

"I used my desires for sex, alcohol and pleasure to get my basic instincts met to dominate and control. "Find, Feel, F... k, Forget."

None of Richards's victims have come forward. Due to confidentiality laws information could not be obtained from the clinics and hospitals he worked at over the years. Written admission of crimes is not enough to press charges or hold muster in a court of law. My hope is that this experience has stopped him from abusing anymore victims. He has been a great teacher for me and a gift to my work with violent clients.

Thank you for reading this article. I've dedicated my personal and professional life to the importance of non-violence and self-love by teaching from my own experience. As a result, I've learned a lot about what it takes to put an end to the relationship abuse. And, as I learn and grow, I teach self-compassion and give advice I use myself, in the hopes that it helps you to improve your own life.
