The benefits of environmental management systems for small and ...

Defra?s recent evidence-based study into the benefits of environmental management systems for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) presents new evidence of the financial benefits of green business. Four companies involved in the study agreed to showcase their experiences through case studies, which have been published alongside the main report.

What is the study about and why is that significant?

The study provides new evidence of the financial benefits to SMEs of developing an accredited environmental management system (EMS) to assess and manage their environmental impacts, and help use resources more efficiently. This supports Defra?s view that embedding resource efficiency across business operations brings benefits to the whole organisation. While not statistically significant, the sample of 31 SMEs used in the study is still the largest group of small and medium sized enterprises to undergo a detailed investigation of its certified EMS in the UK.

Defra encourages all organisations to implement an environmental management system, which is a structured framework for managing an organisation?s significant environmental impacts.?Similar to quality and safety management systems, an EMS can be a practical tool to help organisations manage, evaluate and improve their environmental performance in a verifiable way as well as meet their legal obligations concerning the environment.

Organisations?can demonstrate their commitment to meeting their environmental responsibilities by getting their EMS certified to ISO 14001, BS 8555, or the EU Eco-Management Audit Scheme, all of which are standards accredited by the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS).

What are the key findings of the study?

Two thirds of businesses surveyed either increased sales, or expected to do so, since implementing an environmental management system.? This breaks down into just over a third of SMEs in the study attributing their new business sales to implementing a certified EMS, and quoting an average value of ?14,961 per ?1m turnover in the year following certification, suggesting a payback period of 1 month for the new business sales alone versus EMS costs. Another third confirmed that they expected new sales to be achieved as a result of their EMS, but could not put a value on it.

Commercial and marketing opportunities were by far the most important initial trigger for the SMEs? decision to adopt an EMS, suggesting that this is more important than cost savings in converting SMEs to the benefits of EMSs.

Nevertheless, certified EMSs delivered cost savings for the majority of the 31 SMEs, with an annual average saving over 2 years of ?4,875 per ?m turnover. The costs of certifying and implementing the EMS were calculated at ?1,362 per ?m turnover (annual average over 2 years), suggesting a payback period of 3 months for the cost savings.

What was the reason for the study, and what problems did it seek to address?

Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are a vital part of the local and national economy accounting for 99.9% of all enterprises in the UK, and providing 59.8% of all private sector jobs in 2009. Due to their sheer number (about 2.9 million), SMEs collectively have the potential to exert significant pressures on the environment, but face a number of obstacles to addressing these pressures including lack of resources, specific expertise, information and awareness. Despite the vast number of SMEs in the UK only a very small proportion hold a certified environmental management system (EMS).

The purpose of this study was to deliver robust evidence on the environmental and financial benefits of certified EMSs for SMEs by surveying selected SMEs from both manufacturing and service sectors. The subsequent aim was to use this evidence to increase SME uptake of accredited EMSs as a method of unlocking the latent environmental and financial savings that are believed to exist in the SME sector as a whole.

How was the study conducted, and how robust was it?

The study was conducted by WYG, a? global multi-disciplinary consultancy, whose researchers measured the effectiveness of EMS implementation by a sample of SMEs taken from the manufacturing and service sectors. They investigated the level of environmental and cost savings the SMEs had achieved, including any new business sales. The international EMS standard ISO 14001 dominated the study?s sample of 31 SMEs, which tallies with the market dominance of this standard in the UK. Six of these had used the BS 8555/Acorn approach to reach ISO 14001, while 3 had remained at a particular BS 8555/Acorn phase.

Numerous methods were used to recruit SMEs for the study, however the SMEs were not randomly selected and each chose to participate in the study so were therefore ?self-selecting?. Therefore the results should be viewed as a series of case studies from which useful data can be drawn to raise awareness of the potential benefits of an accredited EMS for an SME

What other interesting findings came out of the study?

There was considerable variation in the savings seen. Not all SMEs in the study achieved savings but those SMEs that invested more in implementing the EMS upfront achieved the highest savings.

All but one of the SMEs in the study had received requests for information from customers about their EMS and over a half of the SMEs had in turn contacted their suppliers.

The study showed, the environmental issues that delivered the highest cumulative cost savings were energy, raw materials and business travel.? Waste to landfill contributed the highest average savings at 28 percent in year one and 43 percent in year two. Furthermore, 28 SMEs made an average cumulative saving in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) of 38.9 tonnes per ?m turnover per SME and that the carbon savings improved over time (Year 2 figures up 59% on Year 1 figures).

Environment Minister Richard Benyon underlined the link between environmental management and sustainable growth:

?All businesses should be planning green and growth together ? thinking strategically about environmental management leads to more sales, bigger profits and a more attractive business to clients and investors.

?It?s one of Defra?s top priorities to build a strong and sustainable green economy that is resilient to climate change. With business, we are working to green and grow our entire economy, protecting our environment and creating new investment, technologies and opportunities for trade.?

What are the next steps?

One of the aims of the study was to use the evidence to increase SME uptake of accredited EMSs as a method of unlocking the latent environmental and financial savings that are believed to exist in the SME sector as a whole. As part of this, Defra and WYG are in the process of disseminating the results of the study as widely as possible to the SME community, through their trade associations, stakeholder organisations and media channels.

Boat and boat insurance at the right price

Getting boat insurance is a matter of finding the right boat an then an insurance company to look after your specific situations. In general, the more conservative boat insurers tend to have the lower premiums. By being so conservative, they tend to stay away from writing Florida boat insurance policies for situations that think seems too risky or too far outside their basic risk guidelines. In many instances, a boat owner can fall into these lower rate guidelines by making some simple adjustments to their boating situation.

Some of the most important things a conservative Florida Boat Insurance Agency looks at when underwriting a Florida boat insurance policy is size speed and horsepower.

If you are trying to deciding on which type of boat you want to buy is all a matter of taste. Say you are young and are a speed freak, or you aren't into racing, you might want to consider a boat which has a smaller boat size to horsepower ratio. Just like cars, you are into speed you buy a tuner sports car, if your into luxury, you buy a Cadillac. If you have a teenager, you might want to steer clear of the sportier boats or large Seadoos if you're looking to save money on insurance. Also make sure your young teens go to a training class and are very well trained before they can even take the sports boat out unsupervised.

Another important issue to boat insurance Florida, is how you use your boat. Will you be fishing inland in a large lake? Or do you take your boat out on the ocean to deep sea fish regularly? Will you be close to the shoreline? Or will you be taking trips into the Caribbean?

Do you plan on doing a lot of wakeboarding, water skiing and tubing? Who are the people you are pulling? Who will be operating the boat? How many years of experience do these operators have with pulling a water skier? Who are the water skiers? Will there be business use or chartering of the boat? As you decide on these issues, your local agent will be able to choose the coverage that's best for you, with a premium that works for your budget. I mean what's the point of getting a speed boat if you can't afford to insure it. ?

Clarion's Android-running Mirage IVI: a head unit that can play ...

CLARION LAUNCHES 1st ANDROID-BASED FULL AUTOMOTIVE GRADE CAR STEREO

PENANG, 27 March 2012: Clarion Malaysia has launched the Clarion Mirage ? the first
Android-based full automotive grade car stereo.

Equipped with a 6.5-inch screen and the iconic Android touch-screen graphical user
interface (GUI), the Clarion Mirage is an integrated audio-visual-navigation (AVN) unit that
was conceived and developed in Clarion Penang, Malaysia. It offers connectivity to an
Android or iPod device via Bluetooth streaming or a USB connection for content streaming, playback and hands-free in-car telephony.

The Clarion Mirage also offers playback of AV content ? audio files, video files and digital still
images ? direct from a SD/SDHC card or a USB device. Its other key features include an in-
built Navigon navigation system, AM-FM radio with RDS and Clarion?s proprietary VAPS 3D
digital sound processing system.

Clarion Malaysia managing director T.K. Tan described the Clarion Mirage as "a smart car
stereo."

"Anyone who uses an Android cell phone knows that it is much more than just a device to
make and receive calls. It is a smart phone. Similarly, the Clarion Mirage is more than just
your typical car stereo. It is a smart car stereo that is upgradeable," he said at the global
launching ceremony of the product here today.

Tan said the Clarion Mirage was "Malaysian by birth, but it is also, in form and function, a
technology product for the global market in this second decade of the 21st Century."

"This product was conceived in Penang, Malaysia, with full development support from our
Clarion HQ in Japan and the Malaysian Government. It is only right that we launch it right
here, today. That said, the Clarion Mirage was developed in collaboration with our renowned
global technology partners," he added.

Wind River, a world leader in embedded and mobile software and a wholly owned division of
Intel Corporation, assisted in the development of the unit?s customised Android software
platform and provided software integration.

Navigon AG, a Garmin company, provided the navigation engine and helped Clarion
Malaysia to compile, for the first time, a seamless regional map for Thailand, Malaysia and
Singapore.

Meanwhile, Plextek Ltd, a UK-based research and development company, collaborated with
the Clarion R&D Team to complete the designing of the hardware.

VIPs who were present to witness the global launching today include Georg Doll (Vice-
President/General Manager, Automotive Solutions, Wind River Germany) and Ian Murphy
(Technical Director, Plextek Ltd).

Tan said the Clarion Mirage was a full automotive grade (or original equipment manufacturer) product that would be marketed to car manufacturers and assemblers worldwide.

"In order to qualify the Clarion Mirage as a full automotive grade product, we have had to
design, develop and test it to meet international automotive standards for quality and safety. Only then do we dare to market it as a full automotive grade product to car manufacturers or assemblers worldwide for placement in new cars," he said.

"Since the introduction of Android smart phones and tablets, those of us who love our tech-
toys have asked what it would be like to put an ?Android? in a car. Today, Clarion Malaysia
has answered that question with the Clarion Mirage.

"We are launching the first Android-based car stereo that is upgradeable and fun, yet safe
enough and reliable enough for car manufacturers and assemblers to put in your next new
car," he added.

Clarion Malaysia designs and manufactures automotive audio and video products and
related accessories. It also serves as the regional sales and marketing headquarters for the
Asian, Middle East and African markets.

Regular chocolate eaters are thinner

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Katherine Hepburn famously said of her slim physique: "What you see before you is the result of a lifetime of chocolate." New evidence suggests she may have been right.

Beatrice Golomb, MD, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and colleagues present new findings that may overturn the major objection to regular chocolate consumption: that it makes people fat. The study, showing that adults who eat chocolate on a regular basis are actually thinner that those who don't, will be published online in the Archives of Internal Medicine on March 26.

The authors dared to hypothesize that modest, regular chocolate consumption might be calorie-neutral ?in other words, that the metabolic benefits of eating modest amounts of chocolate might lead to reduced fat deposition per calorie and approximately offset the added calories (thus rendering frequent, though modest, chocolate consumption neutral with regard to weight). To assess this hypothesis, the researchers examined dietary and other information provided by approximately 1000 adult men and women from San Diego, for whom weight and height had been measured.

The UC San Diego findings were even more favorable than the researchers conjectured. They found that adults who ate chocolate on more days a week were actually thinner ? i.e. had a lower body mass index ? than those who ate chocolate less often. The size of the effect was modest but the effect was "significant" ?larger than could be explained by chance. This was despite the fact that those who ate chocolate more often did not eat fewer calories (they ate more), nor did they exercise more. Indeed, no differences in behaviors were identified that might explain the finding as a difference in calories taken in versus calories expended.

"Our findings appear to add to a body of information suggesting that the composition of calories, not just the number of them, matters for determining their ultimate impact on weight," said Golomb. "In the case of chocolate, this is good news ?both for those who have a regular chocolate habit, and those who may wish to start one."

Real Estate Investing Guidance ? Several Strategies to Revenue ...

The big doggs are made daily using a fantastic investment car called real estate property. With this desire in mind, it is important to choose the strategy along with know the elements that will lead to your success. While using following techniques as a place to start, you can define your ?high level? strategy and focus the methods to increase success.

Buy, Fix, Turn

The profit middle in this predicament is really the good quality and velocity with which you possibly can upgrade home and sell. In case you have the perfect renovation task you need to ensure that there is a strong return on investment (Return) once you are done.

One key to this method is to purchase the most severe property within the best local community and bring it up to requirements that consumers in the area would certainly expect. Trying to get a cheap home or refurbish a great spot with inexpensive upgrades merely won?t work. Understand your industry, know your neighborhood and understand the value that you will be adding to the property.

Hold along with rent

This tactic really depends upon cash flow from rental revenue. Choosing to lease fits that old line, ?you you could make your money when you buy, certainly not when you offer.? If you possibly could find a fantastic property which has a positive income (after all bills) and month to month equity build-up your long-term ROI is going to be great.

Whenever calculating the net income from rent, be sure to include both immediate month to month and possible long-term expenses. Invoice factoring in the installments, interest along with taxes (Hole) is as crucial as the home insurance coverage, condo service fees, maintenance along with management service fees.

Speculation

1 major decision when shelling out is whether you?ll become a trader or a real estate property speculator. The investor buys for short-term profit (acquire low, offer high), local rental income (good cash flow) or even increasing price (renovators); the speculator will buy real estate using long-term plans along with future situations in mind. Supposition involves both buying in the depressed (lower) market or even buying just before a growth.

Knowing when to jump right into a down information mill as interesting as understanding when to get free from a growth! When investing in this technique, you need to complete a thorough investigation of why there is a industry change and when the increased price will take spot.

If you choose to take this road, ensure that you have the available income to support the property (including organic land, getaway property or even options) and also have a clear exit strategy in your mind. This is the most challenging to support; even so, it can be the most lucrative within the long-run.

Final Thoughts

Being a real estate investor can be an interesting step toward financial freedom. However you strategy the market, be sure to have a apparent entry along with exit strategy in place. Also, ensure that your finances can support the ways you choose along with minimize the risk be preserving your real estate teaching current.

Mayor Vincent C. Gray Balances FY 2013 Budget with No New Taxes

?

From Robert Marus: ?Mayor Vincent C. Gray today released his Fiscal Year 2013 Proposed Budget and Financial Plan. The $9.4 billion budget places a premium on fiscal responsibility by closing an anticipated $172.1 million gap between revenues and expenses without raising new taxes or adding new fees, and without dipping into the District?s crucial reserve fund.

?

?This budget continues to fund my administration?s top priorities ? education, public safety and jobs and economic development ? while respecting the fiscal discipline required to safeguard those services for the future,?Mayor Gray said.??We had to make difficult choices, but we believe this budget maintains the right level of government services, including protecting our most vulnerable citizens, without raising taxes.?

?

The plan closes the budget gap with $102.7 million in cuts to expenditures (60 percent of gap) and $69.4 million in revenue initiatives (40 percent of gap).

?

Mayor Gray and his budget team adhered to four basic principles in assembling the proposal:

?

?????????Ensure a structurally balanced budget;

?????????No new taxes or fees;

?????????Continue strategic investments in education, public safety and workforce development; and

?????????Protect the District?s most vulnerable residents.

?

One way that the budget avoids new taxes or cuts to crucial social services is by improving the way the government collects revenue.??One thing we need to do a better job of is collecting what is already owed to the District government, and this budget invests in improving the efficiency of our revenue-collection process,??Mayor Gray said.

?

The budget also takes advantage of opportunities to increase government efficiency in other areas identified by the recently concluded One City Performance Review, which Mayor Gray initiated last year and which was led by former D.C. Chief Technology Officer Suzanne Peck. Initiatives generated by the review closed $15.9 million of the FY 2013 budget gap.

?

?The One City Performance Review process was a great success, and I?m grateful to Suzanne Peck and her team for helping us identify efficiencies that allowed us to cover nearly $16 million ? with more in the future as longer-term ideas are implemented,??Mayor Gray said.

?

Despite cuts in some areas, the budget makes strategic investments in others:

?

?????????A 2-percent boost in the per-pupil funding formula?for students in the D.C. Public Schools and public charter schools. The increase is part of an overall $85.8 million in additional investments for the District?s traditional and charter public schools.

?????????A $20.5 million increase for the Metropolitan Police Department, fully funding a force of 3,907 sworn officers and funding 29 new civilian positions in the department.

?????????A $6.6 million increase in local funding for workforce-development initiatives?through the Department of Employment Services.

?????????Increased funding for ethics-regulation agencies, including the Office of Campaign Finance and the new Board of Ethics and Government Accountability.

?

In an effort to engage District residents and stakeholders on what his budget proposal means for them, Mayor Gray will embark on a series of town hall and neighborhood budget briefings. Budget town halls are scheduled for each of the District?s eight wards:

?

WARD 8: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Monday, April 2nd, Savoy Elementary/Thurgood Marshall Gymnasium

WARD 3: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 4th, Alice Deal Middle School

WARD 5: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 10th, McKinley Tech High School

WARD 7: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 17th, Deanwood Recreation Center

WARD 2: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, April 19th, Historic Charles Sumner School and Archives

WARD 4: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Monday, April 23rd, Brightwood Elementary School

WARD 6: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 25th, Eastern Senior High School

WARD 1: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Monday, April 30th, Bell Multicultural High School

?

An additional youth budget town hall meeting is being scheduled.

?

More information on the budget is available at the Mayor?s budget website,?budget.dc.gov.

Urbane Talk ? Blog Archive ? Home Improvement Ideas For ...

It can be especially rewarding to a homeowner if they can bring their dreams into reality. The great thing about this is the satisfaction you can get. Some very minor tasks may appear to be a bigger project than they really are. Whenever you are able to do the job yourself, you will obviously be saving on expense. On the other hand, you must work safely at all times, and leave the serious electrical work to those who are trained and licensed. Any funds that were issued to your electrician may be minimal compared to the price that could be paid with an electrical malfunction down the road.

Most of the multistory homes come with a standard railing for the stairways. There really is not much creativity to those simple black wrought iron railings. So this improvement project is about replacing your unsightly stair rails with more attractive materials. After going online and seeing the variety of wooden stair rails available, you will understand why this is a good project to take on. The variety of wood you are interested in is most likely available. Instead of a standard, boring type of design; these railings will exude an aura of creativity. After seeing the different types of railings you could have in your home; you will not look on the old standard types the same way. This project, replacing the electrical covers, is only the first step ? there are several other home improvement projects that you can start. The open doorways and throughways from one room to another can be trimmed out. Doing this will only take a few hours. It is also an economical way to do a home improvement project that will last many years. Attractive wood trim can be placed around these areas to improve the way that it appears. This trim can be added, along with replacing the base trim on the walls near the floor. All you have to do is hammer the trim into place. This will secure it for many years to come.

Even for a guy who lives alone, coming home to a totally dark house makes you much more careful and vigilant for a few minutes. More importantly, if you work at night, or if you are gone much of the evening, people might notice that you were gone because your house will be dark. One way around this, and to solve your problem with lighting, is to add timers that turn on at predetermined intervals. Simply plug these devices into your wall and they will do the work. Once they start turning your lights on and off, they will help you deter potential crime. There are a number of easy security upgrades you can make to your home. Just do a little research on the Internet to find what you are looking for.

Actually we love the eating bar home improvement idea because it will make the area open up and appear larger. You may think it is a massive and challenging project however as you have just read there really isn?t much to it. That is always the way it seems to be, things around the house tend to sound complicated. Simplifying things begins with expanding upon your knowledge and increasing your self-assurance.

5 Key Elements of Modern Inbound Marketing | Business 2 Community

Last week, I made the case for a new definition of inbound marketing, or as Michael Brenner (@brennermichael) called it in the comments, a ?call to arms? for inbound marketers.

The new definition: Inbound marketing is marketing focused on being found through the recommendation of others and delighting everyone that finds you.

As inbound marketing evolves, the components also need to change. Traditionally, inbound marketing has been functionally defined as the combination of search, social and content. However, these components are not enough for inbound marketers to excel in today?s environment.

This is what modern inbound marketing looks like:

Source: b2bdigital.net via Eric on Pinterest

1. Content Is at the Core

Content strategy and development is core to inbound marketing. Your content is what makes finding you valuable. It is what others recommend. Without great content strategy and development, your inbound marketing program is not sustainable.

2. The Experience Wraps Your Content

If content is the steak, the experience you wrap around the content gives it the sizzle. To delight everyone that finds your content the overall experience must delight. People don?t recommend your content, they recommend the complete experience, including your content.

Personally, I am less likely to share an article through social media if it is on a site that is covered with garish ad units or is always popping up subscribe forms. The content may be valuable, but the experience is degraded.

3. Organic Search Engine Optimization

Organic search results are the search engine algorithm?s recommendation of the best result for a search. It is a valuable recommendation that continues to drive traffic as long as you maintain it. In contrast, paid search is merely an indication you have the budget and skill to run a paid search program. It is valuable, but it isn?t inbound marketing.

According to Shareaholic, organic search traffic from Google, Yahoo and Bing accounted for 51.6% of all traffic in February 2012. If search engine optimization seems like more than you can tackle, here is a practical approach to SEO you can easily apply.

I ignored search as a traffic source for B2B Digital Marketing yet I have seen organic search traffic significantly outpace social media traffic, where I did invest time, in recent months.

4. Social Sharing of Your Content

When other people share your content, and the experience surrounding it, they are recommending it. These recommendations are the social component of inbound marketing and they must be earned with the content and experience you create.

Sharing your own content is not a recommendation. You have merely picked up your social media bullhorn for the modern equivalent of an email blast. Everyone shares their own content, even their bad content. Like paid search, it is valuable, but it isn?t inbound marketing.

5. Public Relations

Journalists or analysts may not directly recommend your product, but when they cite your research, practices or case studies, they are indicating that what you are producing is worth reading, considering or discussing.

In addition to blogger outreach (often included because of inbound marketing?s connection to social media), recommendations through press, analyst and media relations should be on nearly every inbound marketer?s agenda.

In Summary

Modern inbound marketing is built around the core of your content and the experience it is wrapped in. This content and experience is discovered through organic search, other people?s social media recommendations and earned coverage from media, analysts and other publishers.

Your Turn

In the spirit of inbound marketing, if you enjoyed this article or feel this view of the key components of inbound marketing warrants discussion, share it!

As always, I welcome your feedback in the comments below or share your perspective with me on Twitter (@wittlake).

(AP) ? Mike Krzyzewski knew this year's Duke team had its flaws.

Several of them hurt the Blue Devils in a big way on Friday night.

Austin Rivers and Mason Plumlee had 19 points apiece, but Duke struggled from 3-point range and lost 75-70 to Lehigh to become the second No. 2 seed to lose to a 15 during a wild day in the NCAA tournament.

The Blue Devils, who relied on the 3-point shot this season, went 6 for 26 from behind the arc and another speedy guard sliced through their defense. This time it was C.J. McCollum, who finished with 30 points.

"We're not a juggernaut or anything like that," Krzyzewski said. "We have known that throughout the whole season. You have to do it pretty precise, and we just didn't play well offensively the last few weeks of the season. Actually we got better defensively, but offensively we just weren't there."

Duke's players were stunned.

"It's just ... we all could've done more, man," Rivers said. "I never thought I'd be saying this after tonight."

Duke struggled all year long to meet its considerable standards, losing three games at home ? a rarity in the Krzyzewski era. Despite the uneven play, the Blue Devils managed to stay in the top 10 in the polls.

A dramatic come-from-behind win over North Carolina on the road might have masked some problems.

But the Blue Devils missed their first nine 3-point attempts on Friday and had to play catch up for most of the game.

"These past weeks, it seems we've gone in the wrong direction and today we paid for it," said guard Seth Curry, who was 1 for 9 from the field. "We've been playing bad basketball for the past like two or three games and it showed today. They deserved to win and that's on me, personally. I didn't do my job."

Lehigh didn't do much celebrating on the court after the win, wanting to show they expected to win.

"It means a lot as a team, a family and as the Patriot League in general," McCollum said. "We wanted to come out here and protect this team and this family, get the win and we did that tonight."

Lehigh forward John Adams said it was a matter of believing in each other.

"We saw on the selection show we had Duke and we thought we could match up very well against them," Adams said. "We all believed it and we showed it on the floor. Everybody bought into that idea that we could beat them. The rest is history."

History indeed.

The Mountain Hawks are the sixth 15 seed overall to pull off the trick. Norfolk State edged Missouri 86-84 in the West Regional earlier in the day, and No. 13 seed Ohio knocked off Michigan to add to the madness.

Duke dropped its first tournament game for only the second time in the past 16 years, and this one occurred just 55 miles from its campus. The Blue Devils also lost their opener against 11th-seeded Virginia Commonwealth in 2007.

The Blue Devils had no answer for McCollum, the two-time Patriot League player of the year and the nation's fifth-leading scorer.

"They had the best player on the court tonight in McCollum," Krzyzewski said. "He's been their player of the year, and he's really one of the outstanding players in the country. You could see why tonight."

Lehigh (27-7) led most of the game, drawing support from North Carolina fans who borrowed brown signs from Mountain Hawks supporters that read "Go Lehigh" to root against their rivals.

"I've never seen anything like it," forward Justin Maneri said with a deep laugh. "We came to the practice the other day and as soon as you walked in they were going crazy for us and we're like, 'What's going on?' They were like, 'Go Lehigh, beat Duke!' They were screaming. It was nice to have fans here that weren't Duke. I've never seen two schools that hate each other so much."

Lehigh coach Brett Reed said before the game his team came to Greensboro to do more than just compete ? and that's exactly what it did.

The Mountain Hawks led most of the first half despite shooting just 38 percent from the field.

Lehigh grabbed the lead for good at the 8:21 mark of the second half when Mackey McKnight made a 3-pointer. The momentum continued to build as the game went on and the Mountain Hawks started to pull away in the final three minutes.

McCollum hit a 3-pointer off a screen from Gabe Knutson and John Adams followed with a breakaway dunk to push the lead to 61-54 with two minutes to go.

"I told my teammates all year whenever in doubt get me the ball and I'll make a play for us," McCollum said.

Duke would get as close as three twice in the final 30 seconds, including when Quinn Cook hit a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left.

Duke fouled McCollum on the inbounds pass and he made up for two earlier misses from the line by hitting both shots to seal a shocking victory that sent the Greensboro Coliseum crowd into a frenzy.

The Blue Devils (27-7), who were playing without injured forward Ryan Kelly, finished the year with back-to-back losses. They lost to Florida State in the ACC semifinals.

"I've been in it for 37 years and it takes you to incredible highs," Krzyzewski said. "And it also takes you to incredible lows. And tonight's one of those lows. But it wasn't just our doing, they played that well. They played that well. And again my hat's off to them."

When one hybrid is more equal than another

By Dan Carney, msnbc.com contributor

Consumers understand some basic calculus when shopping for cars.?Used to be that Japanese > domestic, but these days it is more like Japanese ~ domestic.

But doesn?t hybrid = hybrid?? And surely BMW > Chevrolet, right?

Well no, actually.?

There are different kinds of hybrids, but one broadly safe generalization is that there are strong hybrids that have big batteries and strong electric motors and there are mild hybrids which offer little more than automatic engine stop/start for improved fuel economy in urban driving.

Chevrolet made the mistake a few years back of branding the Malibu mild hybrid as a hybrid, leading to disappointed customers who thought it would be a Prius-like system.? It wasn?t and to prevent such confusion Chevy now calls its mild hybrid model the Malibu Eco.

This is likely to be the way of most conventional internal combustion-powered cars in the not-too-distant future; the gas engines will stop and start automatically and there may be a bit of electric regeneration under braking and some mild assist during acceleration, but they will effectively be conventional gas cars.

BMW is following this road map, and as part of its increasing efficiency, the company has substituted a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder for its trademark inline-six cylinder engines in the new 528 and 328 models.? The Bavarians figure that drivers of the Ultimate Driving Machine will willingly swap some of the six?s signature smoothness and sound for more power and better gas milage.

They may be right, but that straight-six sound was one of the reasons to select BMW over its increasingly good alternatives.

Additionally, BMW has bolstered the four-cylinder?s frugality with an automatic stop/start system that avoids gas wasted idling at lights.? It is a sound concept embraced by more new models every year and the idea has been around long enough now that customers are familiar with it and comfortable with the notion.

Except that BMW hasn?t executed this basic technology with any finesse.?? I first drove a stop/start-equipped car more than a decade ago at the proving ground of one of the electrical supplier companies that make starters and alternators for the car companies.

Telling people about the technology afterward, they were always skeptical: Isn?t it intrusive, having the engine stop and then having the starter crank it back up again all the time?? Won?t that wear out the starter?

No, silly, they wouldn?t be foolish enough to do stop/start with a regular starter: They do it with a special starter that doesn?t clank into engagement with the flywheel.? The strong hybrids have an electric motor starter built into the flywheel. ?Mild ones like the Chevy use a souped up alternator that is connected to the engine with a belt.

But now comes BMW, with the nerve to do exactly what customers feared all along. They actually expect drivers to tolerate a conventional starter clanking into engagement and then cranking the engine up.

Unlike the seamless Chevy, which starts and stops unnoticeably, the BMW?s engine shudders to a stop, just like the one in your regular car.?? You don?t really notice or care that your car does that because it only does it when you are finished driving, not at every red light.? When stopped, the Malibu Eco?s tachometer drops to 0 rpm, but that?s the only indication the engine has stopped.

On startup, the Malibu?s engine almost magically starts running like it never stopped in the time that it takes the driver?s foot to get from the brake to the gas. ?The BMW makes the strained sounds of the starter churning the engine back to life, and it shudders as it regains the fire.

And get this: BMW uses conventional engine-driven hydraulic power steering.? That means the steering wheel goes heavy and dead in your hands at a stop.? Trying to turn the wheel a bit to prepare for a turn after the stop brings the surprise that the steering doesn?t seem to work.

Force it and the engine groans back to life annoyingly.?The Chevy has electric power steering, which is much maligned for its typical lack of steering feel on cars whose software hasn?t been sufficiently tuned.? But it is a godsend in the Malibu in comparison to BMW?s ham-handed application of hydraulic steering to a car whose engine periodically stops running.

It is no accident that the Malibu?s stop/start procedure is seamless, explained Stephen Poulos, global chief engineer for General Motor?s stop/start technology.? The belt-driven electric motor brings the engine to life in less than one full rotation so it just springs to life.? When stopping, the same motor works to dampen any vibrations from the stopping engine.? It also halts its spinning in one rotation, while the BMW in contrast chugs on for a couple dying spins before its melodramatic silent-film death.

Chevy?s engine management computer also uses the throttle to assist a smooth stop, and stops the engine so precisely that it is in the best position for a quick, smooth restart.? BMW?s, umm, doesn?t.

So its worth noting that some carmakers are doing their homework, while others are counting on the idea that the teacher won?t check theirs based on their reputations as model students.? I checked and BMW gets an F for this one.? Time for them to head to study hall for some remedial work to make BMW = Chevy.

Fighting cancer with nanotechnology

Fighting cancer with nanotechnology [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 14-Mar-2012

Will advances in nanotechnology be a game changer for the war on cancer?

Imagine a test that sifts through millions of molecules in a drop of a patient's blood to detect a telltale protein signature of a cancer subtype, or a drug ferry that doesn't release its toxic contents until it slips inside cancer cells.

These and other nanotechnologies could be game changers in how we diagnose, monitor and treat cancer, according to Mark Davis, Professor of Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology, and a member of the Experimental Therapeutics Program of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the City of Hope.

Davis discussed how nanotechnology was revolutionizing the battle against cancer when he gave the Fred Kavli Distinguished Lectureship in Nanoscience at the fall meeting of the Materials Research Society a lecture that has since become available on the web. Focusing on nanoparticles, Davis said during the lecture, "We're trying to create these nanoscale particles for solid tumors [and] there really is, in my opinion, a very high potential to creat new types of therapies and allow people to have a high quality of life."

Later discussing these advances with three other researchers, Davis elaborated, saying, "What's really exciting to me is the patient evidence that reveal nanoparticles are actually going into tumor cells and releasing their payloads [We're also] starting to see preliminary evidence that these therapies are having some effects in patients while also giving them a high quality of life."

According to Michael Phelps, Norton Simon Professor, and Chair of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at the University of California Los Angeles, another promising technology is PET molecular imaging probes, which can rapidly search for cancer throughout all tissues of the body, as well as characterize each cancer lesion it detects within an individual patient. "All cancer treatments are in need of better molecular diagnostics... to better characterize the biology of cancer," said Phelps.

"Nanotechnology is an amazing discovery tool ...giving us a new set of eyes that are opening up a whole new world," said James Heath, Professor of Chemistry at Caltech and a founding Board member of Caltech's Kavli Nanoscience Institute. "All evidence suggests that when you do careful engineering of these nanotechnologies, the benefits are great."

Anna Barker agreed. The Former Deputy Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and current Director of Arizona State University's Transformative Healthcare Networks, she said, "The nanotechnologies that are currently in use in the cancer community are actually making cancer therapies safer. They are uniformly increasing the efficiency, while reducing the toxicity for patients."
