All Blacks coach suspected World Cup match fixing

Former All Blacks coach Graham Henry has revealed he suspected possible match-fixing in the All Blacks shock 2007 World Cup loss to France but his plea for an investigation was rejected.

Henry's suspicions are revealed in advance excerpts from his soon-to-be released biography "Graham Henry: Final Word".

In the book, he tells how he "briefly contemplated match-fixing as the only logical explanation" for the upset 20-18 loss to France in the 2007 World Cup quarter-finals, Fairfax Media reported Sunday.

Henry, who stepped down as All Blacks coach after guiding the team to win the 2011 World Cup, said he was stunned by the lopsided penalty count which heavily favoured France.

He analysed video of the game and in a report to the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) he urged it to "pressure the International Rugby Board to institute an inquiry".

According to the biography, he believed the video "would confirm that referee Wayne Barnes and his touch judges, Jonathan Kaplan from South Africa and Tony Spreadbury from England, hadn't exactly covered themselves in glory at the Millennium Stadium, that they had missed an obvious forward pass when France scored its match-winning try - a pass so forward everyone in the stadium had witnessed it except the referee - and that Barnes had been pretty lenient on the French at the breakdowns, probably costing the All Blacks the game".

The video contained statistical breakdowns that showed the All Blacks had an overwhelming 73 per cent territorial advantage, won 166 rucks to 42 and made only 73 tackles compared with France's 331.

The NZRU chose not to seek an investigation and Henry felt it was "incomprehensible" the International Rugby Board did not have strategies in place to investigate bizarre matches.

Biography author and veteran New Zealand rugby writer Bob Howitt wrote: "He knew if a comparable situation had occurred in other sports, it would be investigated.

"But there existed a blissful purity about rugby, or at least that's how everyone wanted to perceive it. It wasn't politically correct to even suggest the match officials might have favoured one team."

The All Blacks had been hot favourites to go through and win the tournament, and Henry told Radio Sport that something didn't feel right about the shock loss to France.

"I've been involved in 140 test matches and 20 years of coaching at provincial level or the level above and 12 years of coaching international rugby and I've never been involved in a game that was like this game," he said.

Olympic viewing: NBC sets opening ceremony record

NEW YORK (AP) ? A look at media coverage of the London Olympics:

An opening ceremony from the mother country with a Beatle, a queen and Mr. Bean proved irresistible for viewers in the United States, with a record-setting 40.7 million people watching NBC's first night of summer Olympics coverage.

The Nielsen company said Saturday that London's opener was the most-watched opening ceremony of any summer or winter Olympics. It topped the previous mark of 39.8 million people who watched the 1996 Atlanta Olympics begin, and the 34.9 million who watched the colorful first night from Beijing four years ago.

The London ceremony featured an unusual made-for-TV stunt featuring actor Daniel Craig portraying James Bond escorting the real-life Queen Elizabeth II to the ceremony and ended with Paul McCartney's anthemic "Hey Jude." But according to Twitter, the biggest spike in tweets came when actor Rowan Atkinson ("Mr. Bean") appeared in a "Chariots of Fire" homage.

An estimated 5 million comments about the opening ceremony were made on social media, according to the research company Bluefin Labs. It was more interesting to women, apparently, as 58 percent of the comments were from women and 42 percent from men, Bluefin said.

It was the most-watched television event in the U.S. since the winter, when 39.9 million people watched the Grammy Awards and 39.3 million saw the Oscars.

The results were a good sign for NBC and broadcast TV in general, which is increasingly finding that big events draw people to the screen more than regular entertainment programming ? most likely encouraged by multi-screen experiences, or people conversing through social media while watching television.

NBC Universal also earned a measure of redemption from critics. The company, which began streaming all of the Olympics competition online live Saturday, was blistered on Twitter on Friday by people who wondered why the opening ceremony wasn't shown live (it was aired on NBC on tape delay, because London's time zone is five hours ahead of the eastern United States). But four years ago in Beijing, NBC learned such complaints only increased buzz and made people more interested in watching it on TV in prime time.

"The audience number for the London opening ceremony is a great early sign that our strategy of driving people to watch NBC in prime time is working," said Mark Lazarus, chairman of the NBC Sports Group.

But in an increasingly wired world, that strategy is becoming a source of controversy for NBC. Twitter was alight again Saturday with complaints against the network for not televising live the men's 400-meter swimming race that American Ryan Lochte won, with Michael Phelps finishing fourth.

Prominent media critic Jeff Jarvis called it "ludicrous" that NBC was airing promotions for the race when it was easy for anyone to quickly find the results on the computer. Others were angry to learn the results on NBC's "Nightly News" before the prime-time telecast. A further aggravation was the telecast itself, including lengthy features with John McEnroe and Lochte, and Ryan Seacrest with Phelps, simply emphasizing that NBC was pumping up a race that had already been run.

The network aired the race live Saturday afternoon on its Web site. NBC has been adamant about saving the highest-profile television events for prime time, when it has its largest audience. Because of the time difference, there are no live events for NBC to show during prime time.

Regionally, the top ratings Friday night were recorded in San Diego, Washington, D.C. and West Palm Beach, Fla., Nielsen said.

Despite selling more than $1 billion worth of advertising for the London Olympics, NBC Universal has said it expects to lose money on the games. Higher ratings, however, could help NBC earn more money by selling additional advertising at a higher cost as the games go on.

RERUN: NBC aired a rerun of Olympics competition at 11 a.m. EDT on Saturday. But it was justified: the network showed Phelps' initial qualifying race, which had been aired live shortly after 5 a.m.

CLOSE GAME: The tighter-than-expected women's basketball game between the U.S. and Croatia challenged NBC announcers Bob Fitzgerald and Lisa Leslie. They were in an awkward position, following the "home team" for U.S. viewers in what was turning into a Cinderella situation for the other side. Before pulling away at the end, the U.S. led 53-49 after three quarters against a team that it had beaten by 54 points a week ago, a team that barely made the Olympics. The announcers could have done a better job exploring the deficiencies of the U.S. play and whether it put an anticipated gold medal run in jeopardy.

QUOTE: "They'll be partying on the streets of Kazakhstan tonight." ? cycling analyst Paul Sherwen after Alexandr Vinokurov's unexpected win in the men's road race.

UPCOMING: The U.S. women's gymnastics team springs into action on NBC on Sunday night. In daytime viewing, the U.S. men's basketball team opens against France.

No Doubt Settle Down Late Night Jimmy Fallon

Gwen Is Rough And Tough On 'Fallon'

Following their performance of ?Settle Down? at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday, No Doubt further got back into the habit of rocking the stage together again by hitting up Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday. Here the band sounded like they?d worked out some of the harmonies on their lead Push And Shove single a little better, and they came across as more relaxed (and like they were having way more fun) than at the TCAs.

Meanwhile, ?Settle Down? debuted at #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week and marked their first appearance on the chart since their cover of Talk Talk?s ?It?s My Life? peaked at #10 back in 2003. Great to see Gwen and the boys getting their groove back.

Stocks set to rally on optimism over Europe

By NBC News and wire services

Stocks are set to rally at Thursday?s opening bell after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said his bank is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the single currency.

Speculation had been rising that the ECB, which holds a policy meeting next week, is considering new measures to tackle the euro zone's debt crisis as countries such as Spain and Italy struggle to fund themselves and evidence grows of a region-wide economic slowdown.

"Within our mandate, the ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro. And believe me, it will be enough," Draghi told a pre-Olympic games investment conference in London.

In a reference to the high premiums peripheral European nations including Spain are forced to pay to raise funds, Draghi said: "To the extent that the size of the sovereign premia hamper the functioning of the monetary policy transmission channels, they come within our mandate."

Before the speech the problems of Spain and Greece had dominated market attention.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso is due to hold talks with Greek premier Antonis Samaras in Athens later, as a group of international lenders try to decide whether to keep releasing funds from a 130 billion euro bailout package or let the country go bust.

Barroso's visit comes after Citi economists raised the likelihood of Greece leaving the euro zone in the next 12-18 months to 90 percent from a 50-75 percent chance previously.

Investors are also worried about Madrid's ability to keep funding itself from the capital markets in the face a sharp slowdown in its economy and growing calls for help from struggling regional governments.

Spain's 10-year government bond yields edged down to around 7.2 percent, but still remain close to their euro era highs of 7.75 percent and at levels deemed unaffordable in the long term.

Before Draghi's comments, stocks were sagging amid expectations that weak economic data in the U.S. will prompt the Federal Reserve to take action to help the struggling U.S. economy.

These hopes were raised after data on Wednesday showed the biggest drop in single-family home sales in a year in June.

"Despite increasing speculation that the Fed will announce a range of measures including further QE, possibly as early as August, the underlying confidence remains fragile and volatility looks set to continue," Mike McCudden, head of derivatives at Interactive Investor, said.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Synthetic drug raids: 90 arrested, $36 million seized

The DEA and law enforcement agencies from across the US strike against synthetic drugs, arresting 90 people, confiscating more than $36 million in cash, and seizing millions of packets of drugs. NBC's Erika Edwards reports.

By Louis Casiano, NBC News

In the first-ever nationwide crackdown on the synthetic drug industry, law enforcement officers arrested more than 90 people, seized $36 million in cash and more than 4.8 million packets of synthetic cannabinoids Wednesday, authorities said.?

Agents also confiscated material to make 13.6 million more packages and 167,000 packages of synthetic hallucinogens, more commonly known as bath salts. In addition, materials to make 392,000 more packets of bath salts were seized.?

Operation Log Jam, a joint effort between the Drug Enforcement Administration and federal and local agencies, was conducted in more than 90 cities spanning 30 states, DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart said at a news conference Thursday.?

She said the raids included 29 manufacturing facilities at every level of the industry,?from small-scale operations to large warehouses.

"The web of connections between the suppliers and the?distributors and the?retailers?is enormous and it's complex," she said.?

Fifty-three weapons and $6 million in assets were also seized during the operation.

Watch US News videos on NBCNews.com

"We also found a number of people involved that are new to the drug business and have now been able to make connections with some of these more seasoned traffickers, and over 70 cases that DEA brought to the table, finding connections between them at all levels," Leonhart said.

In?addition?to the raids, criminal investigation specialists?with the Internal Revenue Service followed the money trail between the parties involved.?

"The major goal is to document the movement of money during the course of the crime, link between where the money comes from, who gets this," said Richard Weber, IRS?Chief?of Criminal Investigation.

Tobacco, smoke shops and adult stores cooperated with the Department of Homeland Security, said James Chaparro, acting director of ICE?s Office of Homeland Security Investigations.?

Law enforcement officers in West Palm Beach, Fla. arrested three men involved with Kratom Labs, the maker of the drug, ?Mr. Nice Guy.? NBC station WPTV?reported.? The station reported the drug is labeled as incense and was distributed throughout the country.

The owner of a store and warehouse in New York State was arrested after authorities swept in and seized synthetic cannabinoids and synthetic amphetamines that mimic the affects of marijuana and meth.

Officers said they had warrants to seize $400,000 of the man?s funds.?

Video: DEA news conference

Authorities?looked at mail?facilities that are used by?traffickers?to ship chemicals internationally and domestically.

"The more we can keep it out of the country, the more we can protect public safety," Chaparro said.?

Synthetic drugs, some known as bath salts, K-2, Spice and Vanilla Sky, have been?deceptively?marketed to young people, causing health problems and even death, Leonhart said.

"What's troubling is they're marketing to young people, young people have an outlet at these smoke shops, these retail outlets," she said.

Many of the drugs have a disclaimer warning against human consumption, but Leonhart said that's just a way to cover up the danger they pose.

"So little know about these substances, because of the dangers, you've seen the headlines, people who have committed murders, suicide, those calls to poison control."

DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart discusses 'Operation Logjam,' the first nationwide law enforcement strike which targeted synthetic drugs across 90 cities in 30 states.

She told reporters the problem of synthetic drug use is a bigger problem than most people think.?

"I put it up there with prescription drugs because they're emerging problems," she said.

Officials said calls to?poison?controls centers involving synthetic drugs in the last year have increased twenty-fold.

Stay informed with the latest headlines; sign up for our newsletter

Chaparro said the problems with these drugs aren't limited?to the U.S.

Earlier this month, President Barrack Obama signed a bill that banned the sale, production and?possession?of some chemicals used for making many types of synthetic drugs. The bill added 15 synthetic drugs to the Controlled Substances Act.?

Synthetic drugs were initially thought to be a factor in an infamous case in Miami in May, when a naked man was fatally shot while chewing the face of a homeless man. But toxicology tests found he had only marijuana?in his system.?

Financial Times: Nokia mulling revenue split with carriers for Windows Phone 8

FT Nokia mulling revenue split with carriers,

The Financial Times has reported that Nokia is in "exploratory" talks with several European carriers to share revenue for its upcoming Windows Phone 8 handsets in exchange for dedicated support. This would be a shift from its normal modus operandi, which is to sell as many phones as it can across all carriers at once, in favor of an approach which resembles Apple's deal with AT&T for the iPhone in 2007. The Finnish company could be hoping to create the same level of excitement for its WP8 phone that Cupertino did back then -- and may also be trying to offer a more profitable carrier alternative to Apple and Samsung, who use their dominance to grab the lion's share of handset revenue. While operators like France Telecom (Orange) and Deutsche Telekom are said to be involved, all parties have declined to comment. So, take this for what it is -- just a rumor at the moment -- but based on deals it made in the US with AT&T and the Lumia 900, it wouldn't be a shocker for Nokia to at least consider it.

The Ten Worst Insurance Companies in America. The title of this article certainly caught my eye and it is well worth the read. It is no secret - I don't like insurance companies. I think insurance companies bully people and take advantage of those who are in a weak part of their lives. I spend a lot of time in my practice trying to explain to clients - former, current, and potential - that the insurance companies are not there to help. The insurance companies are in the business of making money. Don't be fooled by the commercials telling you they will help you with your claim, they will protect you, they will help you get your life back in order. Now, there are definitely some solid, reputable insurance adjusters out there and I have had the pleasure of working with them. But for the most part, even the "nice" adjusters are under strict guidelines to protect the bottom line or risk losing their job.

This article, which is posted by the American Association for Justice, explains that insurance companies are notorious for: (1) raising premiums; (2) denying claims; and (3) outright refusing insurance to people who need it. The article also address the question on everyone's minds - which insurance companies are the worst of the worst? Which insurance companies claim to protect car accident victims or those insured on dangerous properties but then refuse to pay? Which insurance companies claim to protect you if you injure someone in a car crash or if someone is injured on your property? Which health insurance companies aim to obtain your business (and your money) but then when you need their help and need payment for a claim, they tell you that your claim is denied because the treatment is "experimental", or not "medically necessary" or not covered for another reason - and they do so even though the adjusters are not doctors, not nurses, and have no medical training?

Who is the worst of the worst? Allstate, followed closely by Unum, AIG and State Farm. What is Allstate's professed goal? According to its CEO, the mission of Allstate is "to earn a return for our shareholders". What does that have to do with you and your family? If Allstate is willing to openly admit to the public that their mission has absolutely nothing to do with protecting their insureds and those injured by their insureds, why support them?

Over the past 10 years, insurance companies (those handling property and injury/casualty claims) have enjoyed profits of over $30 BILLION a year. These stats are offensive in light of the fact that injured individuals and families who have lost loved ones due to the negligence of another continue to struggle to make ends meet.

Profits over policyholders. Profits over people. It isn't right. Don't support these insurance companies.

Audit says Bin Hammam enriched himself

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? The man in charge of Asian soccer, once a candidate to oust FIFA President Sepp Blatter as the sport's worldwide leader, enriched himself and handed out hundreds of thousands of dollars to friends and relatives, according to an audit obtained by The Associated Press.

Mohamed bin Hammam, a 63-year-old Qatari whose life ban from football was overturned in a sports court earlier this week, is accused of using the Asian Football Confederation bank accounts to conduct his private affairs.

The audit was prepared by the international accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers and dated July 13. A copy of the report was obtained by the AP; its contents were confirmed by two people with direct knowledge of the report who spoke on condition of anonymity because it hasn't been made public.

The report offered rare details of the usually secretive accounts of not-for-profit football bodies handling hundreds of millions of dollars. And it portrayed a man who was running Asian soccer like a family business, negotiating contracts on his own and mingling his personal and AFC bank accounts.

The audit was especially critical of bin Hammam's use of AFC accounts for personal expenses, although there was no evidence of direct payments to bin Hammam.

"It is highly unusual for funds (especially in the amounts detailed here) that appear to be for the benefit of Mr. Hammam personally, to be deposited to an organization's bank account," the audit said.

He received millions of dollars from individuals linked to AFC contracts, according to the audit, and spent tens of thousands of dollars on items like a honeymoon for his son and dental work, haircuts and cash payments for his family.

It found he spent $700,000 from AFC coffers on himself and his family, including $100,000 for his wife, $10,000 on a Bulgari watch for himself and nearly $5,000 for his daughter's cosmetic dentistry.

Payments were also made to Asian, African and Caribbean football officials, including $250,000 to Jack Warner, the longtime strongman of Caribbean football.

"The arrangement with Mr Hammam's use of the sundry debtors account is, in our view, highly unusual and reflects poor governance," the audit said. "This use by Mr Hammam of the sundry debtors account continued even after the external auditor's recommended that it be stopped. Our review indicates that it was common belief that this account was for Mr Hammam personally and all funds flowing through it were his personal monies.

"We question why Mr Hammam would conduct his personal financial transactions through the AFC's bank accounts when the documents we have seen indicate that he already has several personal bank accounts in various countries," the audit said.

The Asian governing body, which he has led since 2002 was advised to seek "legal advice in respect of ... whether the actions of Mr. Hammam, and other parties identified in this report, constitute criminal and/or civil breaches." Bin Hammam was suspended for 30 days by the AFC following receipt of the report last week.

Bin Hammam was not available for comment. His United States lawyer said the allegations were a FIFA tactic to block his return to world football.

"If there were ever any question about the political motives behind FIFA's vendetta against Mr. Bin Hammam, it has been answered by the outrageous and baseless new charges that FIFA and AFC are bringing against him," lawyer Eugene Gulland said in a statement.

The audit found that a contract for commercial rights with World Sports Group and its subsidiary World Sports Football were no-bid contracts that were "considerably undervalued." A $14 million payment from companies with stakes in WSG, Al Baraka Investment and Development Co. and International Sports Events Company, was made to the AFC for the "personal use of its president," the report said.

Bin Hammam also approved several lucrative, no-bid contracts for commercial rights, including one for Qatari-owned Al-Jazeera Satellite Network.

The audit said its review of the AFC accounts found that it routinely handed out tens of thousands of dollars in cash to federation presidents and their relatives. Most of it went to their personal bank accounts and none of it was for football related expenses, it said.

Gaurav Thapa, whose father heads the Nepalese federation, received $100,000 while a Filipino football official Jose Mari Martinez received $60,000 and had $11,226 in hospital expenses paid. Another $50,000 went to an East Timorese football official Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, the audit found.

Another $25,000 went for tuition expenses for a Bangladesh football federation spokesman and $20,000 to cover the cost of cancer treatment for the federation's general secretary.

Also, nearly $2,000 was spent by Bin Hammam to buy 14 shirts for Blatter and nearly $5,000 went toward the purchase of suits for Issa Hayatou, the CAF president.

The acting head of the AFC called for an end to spending abuses.

"I think this development also makes one thing very clear to all of us - there is no place for unethical practices anymore in AFC," Acting President Zhang Jilong said in his opening address Thursday to an executive committee meeting. "I ask this ExCo (executive committee) to prevent any abuse of power and misuse of privileges by any office bearer. I ask this ExCo not to allow anyone to compromise the image of AFC."

Defense cuts: three things Americans should know

The US Capitol building is seen November 2011, in Washington. (Carolyn Kaster/AP/File)

Supporters of robust defense spending tend to justify these expenditures by claiming that the world is much more dangerous today. That?s what former Vice President Dick Cheney argued in a closed-door session with Republicans on Capitol Hill this week.

?No disrespect, but the evidence for that is pretty thin,? Christopher Preble, vice president for defense and policy studies at the libertarian Cato Institute, points out. ?The Soviet Union on its worst day was capable of ending life on this planet in a few minutes. It could do more damage in a few minutes than Al Qaeda has managed to inflict in over a decade.?

Still, the United States continues to spend some $520 billion every year ? plus the costs of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars ? for US military operations. In an acknowledgement of this, Reps. Mick Mulvaney (R) of South Carolina and Barney Frank (D) of Massachusetts proposed an amendment to freeze Pentagon spending at current levels.

?When we are discussing cutting even the most basic social safety net programs, we think increasing the defense base budget makes all our exhortations about the deficit ring hollow,? they wrote in a letter to their fellow lawmakers prior to the vote this week. ?You may want to keep this letter,? they added. ?The chances of receiving one from a more unlikely pair of your colleagues in your time in Congress are probably pretty low.?

The amendment passed with support from 158 Democrats and 89 Republicans, and the House on Thursday voted to give the Pentagon $607 billion in total this year. This is more than the Senate ? which has yet to propose its own version of the defense bill ? or the White House says its wants.

The Dark Knight Rises (for iPad)

The Dark Knight Rises iOS game, Gameloft's official action tie-in with Christopher Nolan's smash hit conclusion to Warner Bros.' Batman trilogy, brings hard-hitting street justice to the iPad and iPhone. The $6.99 game lacks Nolan's strong narrative, but captures the look and feel of The Dark Knight movies while delivering what's importanta fun, engaging video game experience that stretches from Gotham City's rooftops to its underbelly.

Batman Begins
Spoiler alert: See the movie before playing the game because the game features not only Bane and Selina Kyle, but also some of the dialogue from the trailers and TV spots. I haven't seen the film yet, so I'm not sure how much of the movie is spoiled in the game. Tread carefully if you want to go into the film fresh. The game spans six chapters (with multiple missions per section) that take place in well-rendered indoor and outdoor settings. You bash baddies in diverse locations ranging from rooftops to subway stations to skyscraper interiors to Gotham's streets.

Gameloft, thankfully, mixes up the action so that gameplay never gets repetitive. You glide from rooftop to rooftop, hop on the Bat-Pod, and fight foes mano-a-mano. The familiar Batman themes accentuate the action, adding a sense of drama and peril. The game saves frequently, so if you blow a mission, you're not set back too far back. That's a welcome touch, especially in a mobile game that you may play in short sessions on a commute or in a waiting room.

The Dark Knight
Combat consists of striking, evading, and countering?each action's mapped to an individual virtual button when you're in close proximity to an enemy. You as the Caped Crusader can can stun enemies from a distance with the Batarang or drag them toward you after ensnaring them with your grapnel gun's cable. You can unleash some truly impressive combo strings (highlighted by very cool slow-motion effects) that are reminiscent of Rocksteady's critically acclaimed Arkham Asylum and Arkham City games.

The Tech Shop is where Batman powers up his abilities and related gadgetry. You can increase weapon potency, Bat-Pod capabilities, and also outfit Master Wayne with abilities that make him even more bad ass. These upgrades, naturally, are earned; some are unlocked when you reach a certain level (Bat-Pod weapons are available at level 26), and there is also a system for outright purchase with credits. Yes, credits. You earn them in-game by bringing sweet street justice to urban vermin, but you can also purchase them with real-life cash. The base purchase is 2,000 credits for $1.99.

Knightfall
The Dark Knight Rises does a lot right in capturing the feel of Nolan's movies, but there are a few quibbles to address. Although The Dark Knight Rises features a beautifully rendered Gotham City, the streets are surprisingly barren for a city that's modeled, according to various DC Comics sources, on either Chicago or New York City. It's a mausoleum of a city that could have benefitted from citizens simply strolling down the street.

The camera can prove troublesome, too, which is a direct consequence of having touchscreen controls. As there's no physical button to let you know when your finger has slipped off of it, you can accidentally swipe the screen, which shifts the camera. It took me a bit of time to acclimate to the tap controls so that I wouldn't be fighting villains blind.

Holy Quality, Batman!
The Dark Knight Rises is another extremely solid game from Gameloft, a company that has mastered bringing near-console quality games to the mobile space. It's a tight movie tie-in that manages to avoid disappointment?a rarity in the video-game industry. If you're looking for iOS Bat-action after seeing the film, The Dark Knight Returns is worth a download.

NBA Summer League 2012 Game 5 Open Thread: Wizards Vs. Bucks

Photo

The Washington Wizards will conclude their 2012 NBA Summer League schedule with a game against the Milwaukee Bucks at 4 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet and NBATV. The Wizards are currently 2-2, with wins over the Houston Rockets and Memphis Grizzlies, as well as losses to the Atlanta Hawks and NBA D-League Select team.

The Bucks have played just one game in Vegas thus far: a 76-68 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Monday night. Top draft picks John Henson didn't play, and it remains to be seen if he'll play today. However, second-rounder Doron Lamb did and fared very well. Lamb was one of the guys I was hoping the Wizards would consider instead of Tomas Satoransky at No. 32, and early results are encouraging for Bucks fans. He scored 20 points on 6-12 from the field and 8-9 from the line. Second-year player Tobias Harris was also very good, and third-year big man Larry Sanders is a formidable body inside. Brew Hoop has more on Lamb and Harris.

I'm hoping to see the Wizards unleash Bradley Beal's game a bit more in this one. Through the first four games, he's mostly functioned as a spot-up shooter and off-ball player. When they're running plays for him, they've been pindowns. I'd like to see the Wizards test out his pick and roll ability more to see how he fares there. The only time they did was early against the Rockets, and I thought Beal looked very good there. Let him work out the kinks, you know? Summer League is as good a time as any to evaluate this stuff.

I'll be watching this one on delay. Thomas is recapping. Discuss the game here.

Throat cancer victim's self-written confessional obituary goes viral ...

By Agence France-Presse
Wednesday, July 18, 2012 9:28 EDT

?

A US man?s self-written obituary, in which he reminisces about the good times ? and makes a few confessions, including never having earned the PhD he claimed in life ? has gone viral.

Val Patterson, who died of throat cancer last week, professed his abiding love for his wife and remembered the joy of being young in Utah. But he also admitted to some things he shouldn?t have done.

?As it turns out, I AM the guy who stole the safe from the Motor View Drive Inn back in June, 1971. I could have left that unsaid, but I wanted to get it off my chest,? he said in the obituary in the Salt Lake Tribune.

?Also, I really am NOT a PhD. What happened was that the day I went to pay off my college student loan? the girl working there put my receipt into the wrong stack, and two weeks later a PhD diploma came in the mail.

?I didn?t even graduate, I only had about three years of college credit. In fact, I never did even learn what the letters ?PhD? even stood for.?

The 59-year-old described himself as an ?artist, inventor, business man, ribald comedian, husband, brother, son, cat lover, cynic.

?I had a lot of fun,? he wrote.

?It was an honor for me to be friends with some truly great people. I thank you. I?ve had great joy living and playing with my dog, my cats and my parrot.

?But, the one special thing that made my spirit whole, is my long love and friendship with my remarkable wife, my beloved Mary Jane. I loved her more than I have words to express.?

Nonetheless, he said: ?My regret is that I felt invincible when young and smoked cigarettes when I knew they were bad for me.

?Now, to make it worse, I have robbed my beloved Mary Jane of a decade or more of the two of us growing old together and laughing at all the thousands of simple things that we have come to enjoy.?

He concluded: ?If you knew me or not, dear reader, I am happy you got this far into my letter. I speak as a person who had a great life to look back on.

?If you knew me, remember me in your own way. If you want to live forever, then don?t stop breathing, like I did.?

The online obituary was linked to a memorial video on the website of a local funeral parlor ? which crashed Tuesday under the weight of people trying to log on to see more, at one point receiving 100,000 hits a minute.

Using ICTs @ ISOCS: Caffeine

This video from Periodic ?videos arrived in my inbox this afteroon:

In our first video about caffeine, Dr Rob Stockman extracts the molecule from six cups of coffee. Video also features Professor Martyn Poliakoff and Dr Samantha Tang.?

At the end of the video we learn that 17 milligrams of caffeine were in a filter drip cup of coffee....of course, I was curious about how much caffeine there is in other food and drink, for example - ?a bottle of Coca-Cola, and chocolate. A little searching on Google revealed:? "There is 96mg of caffeine in one litre of?Coke Zero?or?Coca?Cola?and 128mg in a litre of?Diet Coke. This equates to about 32mg in a 330ml can of Coca?Cola and 42mg in a 330ml can of Diet Coke. To help put this in context, a mug of tea contains about 75mg of caffeine and a mug of coffee provides about 100mg of caffeine." (link)

Searching on, I came to this chart of Caffeine Content in Drinks, where you can sort by USA, UK/Europe, and Australia/NZ. ?Explore this site a bit, and you'll find interesting graphs, charts, links, and comparisons.?

"The most comprehensive chart of beverage caffeine content online. Find the amount of caffeine in coffee, tea, soft drinks, energy drinks and energy shots.

Note that caffeine amounts are for the whole can/bottle."

It's hard to find out if cafeine content of various drinks is the same in the US as it is elsewhere, because the US content is listed in fluid ounces, and the rest of the world is in ml. ?(1 US liquid ounce = 29.5735296875 ml)
WikiAnswers tells us that a 32 oz can of Coca-Cola Clasic contains 34 mg, "For comparison, green tea has about 25 mg per 12 oz, black about 50, and coffee can have upwards of 200 mg." ? From the Australian Food Standards site we learnt that milk chocolate has 20 mg/100g bar, but the Lindt website says
"Caffeine is a natural compound derived from plant sources like kola nut and naturally found in substances like coffee and tea. However, very little caffeine is found in chocolate in comparison to the amount found in the other commonly consumed sources. Generally, 1oz of Dark Chocolate contains about 20 mg of caffeine 1 oz of Milk Chocolate contains about 6 mg of caffeine 1 oz of White Chocolate contains less than 2 mg of caffeine By comparison, an average can of soda contains about 50 mg of caffeine and the average cup of coffee approximately 80 ? 155 mg. The caffeine content will always vary, depending on the product and even in some cases depending on the specific cocoa bean and origin.?"

So put on your math hats, and figure this out!

1 oz = 28.3495 gr

100 gr =?3.52739619496 oz

Fluid ounces are different from dry ounces...

Here are the various content descriptions:

Tips for Taking the July Texas Bar Exam

Editor's note: Pack a jacket and pain relievers, and request a late hotel check-out. Those are just a few of the suggestions that Lisa Waters, a grader for Texas Wesleyan University School of Law's spring 2012 "Preparing for the Bar Exam" course, has for test-takers sitting for the three-day Texas bar exam, which begins July 24.

Texas Lawyer research editor Jeanne Graham emailed Waters ? an attorney adviser with the Social Security Administrations' Office of Disability and Adjudication Review in Dallas who passed the test last July ? some questions about taking the bar exam. Following are Waters' emailed tips for examinees, edited for length and style.

Texas Lawyer: What is a good study strategy for the last few days before the exam? What worked for you?

Lisa Waters: Incorporate the study techniques ? studying flashcards, posting Sticky Notes throughout your home, etc. ? that worked for you during law school. My technique was studying mini-outlines that I had created along the way. Because bar exam preparation is new to most examinees, they think that they should study differently. But this summer is not the time to make any significant changes in your life, whether it's cutting back on caffeine or experimenting with new study methods. The techniques that got you through law school should get you through the bar exam.

TL: Are there other actions test-takers should take care of this week or items they should make sure they have on hand for the exam days?

Waters: First, book a room at a hotel within walking distance of the exam site. No matter the cost, it's a small price to pay for peace of mind, knowing that you won't get a flat tire on the way to the bar exam. Also, pack whatever you need to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible during these three days. That might include a box fan if you need one to sleep at night, pain relievers to treat the headaches that you will almost certainly have, and a jacket to keep from freezing in the testing center. Further, think about what you will do for lunch on the second and third days of testing. I recommend a meal replacement bar so that you don't have to leave the exam site and don't have to worry that your food sat in your car for hours. Finally, consider asking your hotel for a late check-out on day three to avoid having to pay for an extra night just because you won't return from the exam until late afternoon.

TL: What do you recommend test-takers do the day before the exam? What did you do the day before the July 2011 exam?

Waters: Against my better judgment, I stayed up very late trying to memorize the rules that I had not mastered yet. Obviously, this is not what I recommend to July 2012 examinees. As uncomfortable as you might feel walking into the exam with gaps in your knowledge, you aren't likely to learn what you need to learn the night before the exam if you haven't learned it already; that ship has sailed. More importantly, the practice of law isn't about memorizing and regurgitating legal principles but, rather, is about resolving legal problems. This is especially difficult to do after a sleepless night, so get some sleep.

TL: What do you recommend test-takers do during the evenings after day one and day two of the exam?

Waters: Just as you hopefully did before day one, I would relax and get a good night's rest. However, assuming that day one's material was the last material that you studied the weekend before the exam, you probably need to briefly review day two's material the evening after day one and day three's material the evening after day two. Just do enough to shift gears and bring the relevant information to the forefront of your mind, and set a time limit for yourself so that you don't get too involved. If you have one-page reviews for each subject, those would be ideal to flip through on those evenings.

TL: If you could share just one tip with those who will be sitting for the exam beginning July 24, what would it be?

Waters: Don't get caught up in the minutiae in one subject to the exclusion of heavily tested areas in another subject. While I suggest that you use the same study techniques that worked for you in law school, this does not mean that everything should receive the depth of treatment that you would give it while studying for an A+ in school. Instead, recognize that the breadth of material for which you are responsible is too vast to study everything in such depth. Your task is to get from one end of an Olympic-sized wading pool to the other. You have a lot of ground to cover, but all you have to do is wade through it. This isn't the time to do any diving; in fact, you could really hurt yourself if you tried.
