News and notes from the week in Florida recruiting.
-- With a stacked roster featuring a few Florida targets, Team Tampa won the IMG 7-on-7 Tournament with a perfect record of 9-0. UF targets Vernon Hargreaves III and Leon McQuay III put on quite the show, locking down receivers and making it very difficult on quarterbacks, including Michigan commit Shane Morris. Receivers Travis Johnson (who arguably had the best showing at the tournament) and Alvin Bailey impressed on the offensive side of the ball.
More after the jump.
Hargreaves remains a top target for the Gators. The nation's top cornerback prospect is looking hard at Florida, South Florida, Miami, Clemson and USC, but his recruitment has yet to really pick up. He has ties to USF with his father, Vernon Hargreaves II, being the Bulls' special teams/defensive ends coach. However, while some people (myself included) have believed VHIII to be a lock to USF, that isn't the case. I wouldn't tab Florida as the leader -- I don't think he has one at the moment -- but the Gators are in the picture.
And it'd be really nice to add this type of player to the secondary.
-- Nike's The Opening will take place July 5-8 at Nike's headquarters in Oregon. It's an invite-only event for recruits and is considered one of the elite camps. Florida has seven commits heading to the event: Kelvin Taylor, Caleb Brantley, Ahmad Fulwood, Keanu Neal, Quinton Powell, Nick Washington and Tre Bell. It's a great opportunity for players to learn from top coaches and professional players and also a chance for them to do some recruiting. Last year's event gave us this great photo of then-uncommitted safety Marcus Maye with Joe Haden.
Vernon Hargreaves III, DeMarcus Walker, Leon McQuay III, Alex Anzalone, Marcell Harris, Ebenezer Ogundeko, Josh McNeil and Jordan Sherit are all Florida targets who will be in attendance at The Opening, so the UF commits will be busy recruiting.
Zach Abolverdi has the TV schedule for The Opening, which will be on ESPNU.
-- Linebacker Alex Anzalone will be committing at The Opening July 7 or 8, he says. He committed to Ohio State over Florida a while back, de-committed, and is now probably going to spurn the Gators once more, this time in favor of Notre Dame or Penn State. Probably Notre Dame.
-- We're still waiting for DeMarcus Walker's announcement, which will be Aug. 3. He visited Florida on Friday, and the visit went very well. He had some interesting things to say to GatorSports' Zach Abolverdi about the visit.
"I'll give it to you straight," Walker said. "I've always felt love from the coaches, but at first I didn't feel like I could really trust them. After the visit, I definitely feel like I can. This time me and the coaches sat down and had more one-on-one than we've ever had. We were in the staff room basically all day and I kind of grew close with them. It meant a lot to me. I got to see more of what they're about. So they helped themselves a lot because you have to play for coaches you can trust."
Was the visit enough to put Florida ahead of Alabama? I doubt it. Still, there's always a chance Walker could postpone his announcement (again), which would be a good thing for UF. Regardless of what he does on Aug. 3, his recruitment will go down to Signing Day. Auburn and Clemson are also in the mix.
-- 247Sports released an updated version of its Top 247. Kelvin Taylor is Florida's only five-star commit, checking in at No. 14. UF remains in the race for five-stars Vernon Hargreaves III and Laremy Tunsil.
-- It was requested that we add a recruiting list feature at the bottom of our recruiting posts, like Tomahawk Nation does. Now, we don't like to admit that we're using a good idea from a 'Nole blog, but they do excellent work over there. So here it is, with all of our commitment stories.
