Cowen calls on government to come clean on property tax plans ...

Deputy Barry Cowen

Fianna F?il environment spokesperson Barry Cowen has called on the government to come clean on how it plans to implement the new property tax.

The Offaly TD, brother of former Taoiseach Brian Cowen, made his comments in the wake of weekend reports that the government had already agreed a deal with the Troika behind closed doors that will see taxes levied on the value of homes.

That has been dismissed by Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar as ?premature? but Mr Cowen has nonetheless called for the publication of a report commissioned by the government which was due to form the basis of the property tax strategy.

The Department of Finance said the recommendation of the report will be considered by government in due course.

Cowen says the government has failed to communicate properly with public and to introduce a fair system: ?We?re very anxious that it be published in order to clarify the options that were available to the government and they means by which they want to bring forward a property tax.

?It merely seems to add to the fiasco we?ve had earlier in the year in relation to the collection of the household charge.

?It?s going to result in further chaos.?
