Today's Car Auction Prices As Low As They'll Go | Motoring News ...

It?s mid November and, as has happened every year for the past 20 years, car auction prices have bottomed out.

They have reached a point where the fleets would rather hang on to the cars until January when prices traditionally rise rather than sell them for any less. And, these days, with many of the fleets owned by banks, they can afford to hang onto stock for six weeks better than car dealers can.

So today we saw a lot of ?provisional? bids that may simply have been asking prices. But nevertheless, some cars sold for seriously low money.

A 50k mile 2008/58 Jaguar XF 2.7D Luxury with leather was the cheapest I ever seen one sell for at auction, for ?12,600. But in fact was not that far off trade book, which is ?13,750 for 45k miles.

A 72k so mileagy, but tidy 2009/59 Ford Fiesta 1.6TDCI Titanium 3-dr looked sensible money at ?5,500. A 23k mile 2008/58 Honda Civic 1.8 I-VTEC SE looked cheap at ?5,400 (roomy and 45mpg). A 96k mile 08 SAAB 9-3 1.9TID 120 Airflow was rightfully cheap at ?3,600.

But, to my mind, bargains of the day were a 70k mile 07 Toyota Corolla Verso 2.2 D-4D T2 sold for ?3,800; a 110k mile 2007/57 Vauxhall Astra 1.7CTDI 100 Club estate at ?2,175; and an 85k mile 2002/52 (so 10 years old) Skoda Fabia 1.4 Comfort 16v for ?775.

The message is fairly clear. If you want to buy cheaply, prices won?t go any lower and round about Christmas may start going up again because vendors know they?ll get more in the New Year.

So, two words of advice: ?Buy Now.?
